Imposter
March 2023
If you were going to steal something, what would it be? Gold or silver? Money or diamonds? TVs and game consoles?
There’s a lot of choice. Plenty of items that you could quickly and easily convert into cash.
But some criminals think a little differently. Like the thief responsible for the great Easter Egg Heist of 2023.
A couple of months ago, over 200,000 Cadbury’s Creme Eggs were stolen from an industrial estate in Telford. These creamy, gooey Easter treats may be small, but have a street value of around £40,000. The police were called and a search began for the criminal who was presumably purporting to be the Easter bunny.
Luckily, the coppers involved have been training for this eventuality since they were kids, hunting down easter eggs in the most bizarre places every spring… They thought it was “yolkless” but after a few days the eggs were recovered! The coppers stopped a vehicle on the M42 motorway, and what did they find? Only the Easter Bunny imposter and all his stolen goods. Reports suggest that other types of chocolate were stolen too, but the police appeared to “flake” on the details.
So who was this imposter? Who was the Grinch who tried to steal Easter? Just a homeless man in need of some cash. He was charged with criminal damage and two counts of theft.
So what’s the moral of the story? Nothing is safe. You might think that your cargo isn’t worth stealing if it isn’t high-value or high-risk. But as you can see, you never really know who might think differently.
So insure your goods. As a freight forwarder, I’m always explaining the importance of insurance to people. You just never quite know what might happen, whether it’s a hurricane, a container fire – or an Easter Bunny Imposter!
Got any Easter stories to share? I’d love to hear them…
