The Christmas decorations are down, the leftovers are (finally) gone, and the world is slowly creaking back into motion after the holiday break.
But here at Millennium Cargo? We’re already in full swing. Between moving into our new office, welcoming new team members, and having the usual fun and games with phone lines and broadband (thanks, BT), it’s all systems go.
Even so, over the break, I managed to grab a quiet moment or two to reflect on 2024. And wow – what a year it’s been. If I’ve learned anything from 35+ years in freight (and let’s not count how many years on this planet), it’s that life doesn’t do “easy.” It’s full of highs, lows, twists, and surprises. And this year? It was no different.
Let’s talk about the big stuff. Here in the UK, we saw the first Labour government since 2010 take power. Whether that’s a good or bad thing depends on who you ask, but it’s safe to say the new budget hasn’t exactly eased any nerves. Time will tell. And across the Atlantic? Well, the US decided to keep things interesting. Trump is back, and his new government lineup has already raised a few eyebrows. It’s definitely one to watch in the years ahead.
Then there’s the freight industry. It’s had its fair share of challenges. From the Houthi and Red Sea crisis disrupting shipping routes to Hurricane Helene leaving devastation in its wake, 2024 reminded us how fragile global logistics can be.
But there were bright spots too. Freight demand stayed strong, and technological innovation continued to push boundaries. Germany even piloted automated trucking this year – something that could change the face of freight in the future.
And amidst all the chaos, we saw the best of humanity. After Hurricane Helene, people went above and beyond. Truckers rerouted to deliver aid, ranchers trekked supplies to unreachable areas, private pilots flew in critical medicine, and drone operators dropped emergency packages. It was a powerful reminder: when things get tough, people rise to the occasion.
On a personal level, 2024 was a bit of a mixed bag for me too. I cheered on Aston Villa as they made it into the Champions League for the first time in over 40 years – a highlight I’ll never forget. I also travelled the world, balancing work and football fandom, and celebrated some incredible moments.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. There were health hurdles, staffing challenges and the growing pains that come with business expansion. Still, if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s to focus on what’s next.
And as we step into 2025, there’s plenty to be excited about. We’re settling into a bigger office, growing the team, and even looking at the possibility of regional and global offices. It’s a time of change, but an exciting one. Keeley and Connor are taking on more responsibility, which is fantastic to see – but don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere just yet!
So here’s to 2025: a year for fresh starts, big plans, and making things happen. What are you looking forward to this year? Whatever it is, I hope it’s a good one.
Wishing you a brilliant start to 2025- let’s make it a great one!
