Too Old
January 2023
Older people are getting younger. . What do I mean? Go back a few decades and people in their 30s were wearing cardigans and classed as middle-aged, 40s was old and anything over 50 was ancient.
But today you’ve only got to take a look at TikTok and you’ll soon see plenty of people in their 40s and 50s still looking young, healthy and enjoying life.
30s is still young, 40s is barely middle-aged and if someone dies in their 50s or 60s we consider it before their time. Thanks to modern medicine and improved living conditions, people in the UK are living longer and staying healthy.
But it’s not just these physical differences that have changed, peoples mindset, ideas and opinions have changed too. It’s no longer unusual for someone to jack it all in and start a new career or business in their 40s, 50s or even 60s. People are breaking the mould and refusing to don their slippers, dressing gown and newspaper just because they tipped 40!
The business world is filled with inspiring stories of people who achieved success later in life… Colonel Sanders was 65 when he started KFC. He started with nothing but a chicken recipe and by the time he died there were 6000 restaurants around the world and the company was worth around $6 billion.
Ray Croc was 52 when he founded MacDonald’s.
Martha Stewert’s first cookbook wasn’t published until she was in her 40s.
Vera Wang didn’t enter the fashion industry until she was 41.
Samuel L Jackson was 43 before he landed his first big movie.
But it’s not just the rich and famous who are bucking the trend… everyday people are doing the same too. In Wales, an 86-year-old man, Edward Simon Jones, has become the oldest first-home buyer in the UK when in November he bought his first home, a £147,000 bungalow! So the moral of the story is that you’re never too old to make your dream happen. Whether that dream is building a business, travelling the world or buying a house, make plans, take action and don’t let your age put you off.
And if your dream is to run your own freight business, then get in touch. We’re looking for smart individuals (of all ages!) to set up and run their own Millennium Cargo hub across the UK. Interested? Hit reply and let me know…
So how about you? Have you bucked the “age-trend” and achieved something that you were supposed to be too old or too young for? I’d love to hear your stories…
